The Hummingbird/Y Colibryn
It’s been known as The Talbot Inn, The Habit and The Forum. To celebrate the next stage of its life, the building has been renamed The Hummingbird/Y Colibryn. This is the first time in its 500-year history that the building has had a bilingual name. The owners commissioned a local artist, Olivia Jones, to design the logo and are currently working with a sign maker on the external signage.
Why Hummingbird/Y Colibryn
So why The Hummingbird/Y Colibryn? Fiona Maher, co-owner explains:
“Although not a local bird, we like what hummingbirds stand for. Traditionally, they are associated with a sense of renewal, hope, joy and good luck.
The other thing about hummingbirds is their ability to achieve the seemingly impossible. They are the only bird that can fly backwards, and although tiny, many migrate for thousands of miles.
I’ll be honest, there have been times during the renovations (especially during lockdowns), when it felt like we were on an epic journey trying to achieve the impossible! However, thanks to the efforts of the team that worked with us, the financial support of the Welsh Government’s Transforming Towns Fund and Clocaenog Forest Wind Farm Community Fund, plus the enthusiasm of the local community, we have got to this point – and we are very grateful.
There’s still more to do to get the ground floor café finished, and we know local people are really excited about that (as are we).
Denbigh has a fantastic community, wonderful heritage, and is in a beautiful natural setting. By having The Hummingbird/Y Colibryn in the heart of town, we hope some of the little bird’s energy rubs off as a reminder that, in spite of challenging times, renewal happens and Denbigh continues to be a lovely place to live, work and visit.”
